David Finckel leaving Emerson Quartet
After 34 years as one of the top chamber ensembles, the Emerson String Quartet is bidding farewell to one of its founding members.
Cellist David Finckel will depart the group at the end of the 2012-13 season. In recent seasons Finckel, 60, has been devoting increasing time to other ventures, including performances with his wife, pianist Wu Han, as well as their work as co-artistic directors of both the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Music@Menlo.
The Emerson’s new cellist will be Paul Watkins. In addition to his career as an instrumentalist, Watkins is also music director of the English Chamber Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the Ulster Orchestra.
