The centenary of the birth of the English contralto Kathleen Ferrier
is to be marked by Decca Classics with a 15-disc set containing the complete recordings made by the singer for the label.

The Centenary Edition includes
14 CDs and one DVD, with repertoire that ranges from Bach, Gluck and Handel, to Mahler, Britten and British folk songs.

Born in April 1912, Ferrier’s death from breast cancer at the age of
41 in 1953 robbed British music of one of its most vivacious and vital talents. The conductor Bruno Walter, with whom she recorded Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde and Rückert Lieder, and Schumann’s Frauenliebe und -leben declared of her: “The greatest thing in music in my life has been to have known Kathleen Ferrier and Gustav Mahler – in that order!”

Kathleen Ferrier Centenary Edition – The Complete Decca Recordings is available now.

Ferrier’s Mahler recordings may be matched at times, but NEVER done better. Her reading of ‘Um Mitternacht’ is simply amazing, along with Dr. Walter’s sensitive accompaniments.
