London Philharmonic to release Haydn’s ‘Seven Last Words’ in February
The London Philharmonic Orchestra is to release a live recording of Haydn’s The Seven Last Words
of our Savior on the Cross on its own label.
A series of seven meditations on Christ’s final hours on the cross, and more often heard in an arrangement for string quartet, the orchestral version juxtaposes Haydn’s original instrumental movements with their later choral versions.
Recorded during the orchestra’s Between Two Worlds Schnittke Festival in London’s Royal Festival Hall in September 2009, it features contributions from soprano Lisa Milne, mezzo-soprano Ruxandra Donose, tenor Andrew Kennedy, and baritone Christopher Maltman, with Vladimir Jurowski conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir.
The Seven Last Words of our Savior on the Cross is released on February 1.
