Lang Lang to make his Sony debut in 3D

August 12, 2010

Pianist Lang Lang’s first recording for Sony Classical is to be released on double-CD, DVD and 3D Blu-ray.

After what one commentator described as “the richest headhunt ever seen in classical music,” and following a reported $3 million signing fee, Lang Lang is to make his Sony debut with a concert recorded and filmed Live in Vienna at the city’s Musikverein. It features a brace of sonatas by Beethoven (No.3 in C minor, Op.2 and No.23 in F minor, Op.57, the Appassionata), Book 1 of Iberia by Albéniz, and Prokofiev’s Seventh Sonata in B flat major, Op.83.

The recordings also feature three encores by Chopin: the Aeolian Harp Étude (Op.25 No.1 in A flat major), the Heroic Polonaise (No.6 in A flat major, Op.53), and the Grande Valse Brilliante, Op.34 No.2 in A flat major.

The recording will be released on three formats: standard 2CD; limited deluxe 2CD edition with bonus DVD; a standalone DVD; and Blu-ray, which will include some performances filmed in 3D.

In 2009, Lang Lang was voted one of TIME magazine’s 100 “people who most affect our world.” In his native China he has been credited with the “Lang Lang Effect,” his success prompting some 40 million children to take piano lessons. He began his recording career with the American label Telarc before moving to Deutsche Grammophon. He signed to Sony Classical in February 2010.

Lang Lang Live in Vienna will be released on August 23.
