US cinemas to screen Royal Opera, Covent Garden productions

July 21, 2010

Emerging Pictures has partnered with Opus Arte to screen live high-definition broadcasts of opera and ballet productions from the Royal Opera House in London to cinemas across the United States.

The broadcasts will feature as a part of Emerging Pictures’ current Opera in Cinema series, which already screens live performances from La Scala, Milan and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona into US picture houses. Three broadcasts from Covent Garden have been announced, beginning with the revival of the Jonathan Miller-directed Così fan tutte, conducted by Thomas Hengelbrock, on September 10, the first night of the theatre’s new season.

Verdi’s Macbeth, with Simon Keenlyside in the title role and the Royal Opera’s music director Antonio Pappano conducting, will be screened on June 10, 2011, with the opening night of the Royal Ballet Company’s Giselle, choreographed by Peter Wright to music by Adolphe Adam, preceding it on January 10, 2011.

The partnership between Opus Arte and Emerging Pictures will also see the launch of a new Shakespeare in Cinema series, with live HD broadcasts from the Globe Theatre in London.
