SOMM Recordings to issue first recording of unpublished music by John Ireland

June 21, 2010

The third volume of a series devoted to the solo piano music of John Ireland will feature the premiere recording of the composer’s First Rhapsody.

Dating from 1906, the virtuosic 13-minute-long work has not been previously published and was found in the papers of the John Ireland Trust chairman Bruce Phillips. It will be performed by Mark Bebbington on a disc that also includes the later Rhapsody from 1915, the four Preludes (which include the Christmas carol ‘The Holy Boy’), the Prelude in E flat, and Ireland’s most popular piano piece, April. The disc will be released on the British label, SOMM Recordings.

Bebbington will also give the world premiere performance of the First Rhapsody in concert at London’s Wigmore Hall on 29 September.
