Sony Classical is to be the Vienna Philharmonic’s new recording partner for its traditional New Year’s Day concert.
The relationship will begin with the 2012 performance of the world’s most watched classical concert, with Sony committing to releasing the recording on CD, DVD and Blu-ray formats.
The announcement is the latest high-profile signing by Sony and follows exclusive recording agreements with pianist Lang Lang and conductors Alondra de la Parra and Kristjan Järvi.
The label already has some memorable recordings of an event that is broadcast annually from Vienna’s Musikverein to an audience of 40 million in 70 countries, including Herbert von Karajan’s only appearance in 1987 and Carlos Kleiber’s two legendary concerts in 1989 and 1992.
