Glimmerglass Opera is to re-brand itself as the Glimmerglass Festival from the opening of its 2011 season, the first under new artistic director Francesca Zambello.

Celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, the annual Cooperstown, NY-based organisation intends to include productions of Broadway musicals alongside opera from next summer, as well as an expanded program of concerts, cabaret performances and readings. Zambello’s first year of office will also see the appointment of a Glimmerglass Festival Artist in Residence.

Besides Carmen and Cherubini’s Medea, the 2011 season will also include productions of Irving Berlin’s Annie Get Your Gun and a new opera by Jeanine Tesori and Tony Kushner.

This year’s season, opening on July 9 and running until August 2, features new productions of Tosca, Le nozze di Figaro, the Handel rarity Tolomeo, and Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land.
